About Laithwaite’s Wine Club
Tony Laithwaite founded Laithwaite’s Wine in 1969 when he drove a batch of Bordeaux from Saint-Emilion to sell in Windsor. The original business featured just five wines and served only 150 customers, but steadily grew. To date, Laithwaites has served over 700,000 people in UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the US while maintaining a focus on small-batch wines.
Today, Laithwaite’s Wine is part of the Direct Wines family which includes wine club partnerships with The Wall Street Journal, NPR, TCM, American Express, Virgin Wines, Southwest and more.
All of the Direct Wine’s clubs unite under a shared mission: making it easy and enjoyable for consumers to explore the world of wines that are perfectly suited to their individual tastes. By working together these brands help support small-estate winemakers worldwide and share the stories behind their wines.

Unboxing Laithwaite's Wine Club
Laithwaite’s wine club arrives at your door in a simple, branded brown box. Personally, I love wine clubs that have branded packaging. It gets me excited to know that wine has arrived.
You, or someone over 21-years-old, will need to be available to sign for the box at the time of delivery. Thankfully, Laithwaite’s Wine sends you an email with tracking information as soon as they ship. That way you know when you’ll need to be home.
Laithwaite’s packages their wine with cardboard cases to protect their wine. In the unlikely event that a bottle arrives broken, just reach out to their customer service team within 60 days and they’ll take care of it at no expense to you.
Laithwaite's includes exceptional educational materials with each shipment that set it apart from other clubs. The introductory offer featured tasting notes for each wine with information about each bottle including information about the wine, winemaker, region, and other insights.
The package also included a beautifully-designed pamphlet with more general information about wine and wine tasting. Check it out:
But, enough about the box. How was the wine?
About the Wines and Price
Laithwaite’s Wine rotates what wines they feature in their shipments based on new deals with wineries, fan favorites, and availability. I ordered the mixed selection and received two bottle each of:
- White Visionario (2016)
- HJ Fabre Barrel Selection Patagonia Malbec (2015)
- Black Saint Peter Old Vine Zinfandel (2016)
- Drawbridge Cabernet Sauvignon (2016)
- Marqués de Villanueva Reserva (2012)
- Contessa Giovanna Manci Pinot Grigio (2016)
- Wild Child Chardonnay (2017)
Plus, there was a single bottle of Les Hauts de Gromel Bel Air (2015)
The Visionario was my favorite of the white wines. It is a 93-point premium white wine from Venezie’s northern Italy’s region. The Visionario, or “visionary,” white is a blend from master winemaker Alessandro Gallici and bring together local Friulano grape with Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer. The result is a crisp, medium-bodied, dry wine with fruity flavors.
Of the reds, I really enjoyed the 92-point HJ Fabre Barrel Selection Patagonia Malbec from Argentina. This award-winning wine is valued at over $20 per bottle and a terrific representation of this iconic varietal from this region. This barrel-aged malbec comes from Bordeaux-native Hervé Fabre and has received high praise from enthusiasts everywhere. It boasts rich fruity flavors and a long chocolaty finish that delights the palette.
